2018 International WFTDA Playoffs Atlanta (Georgia, USA) 21 – 23 September
Bear City Roller Derby is changing the course of herstory by being the first German team to ever qualify for the WFTDA Playoffs (previously Division 1). Currently ranked 32 in the world – out of 348, folks – Bear City will be taking the US by storm this September, ponying up against our old pals and friendly-rivals, the London Rollergirls, in the very first game of the tournament. Bring. It. On.
The 2018 International WFTDA Playoffs in Atlanta, (Georgia, USA), will include twelve of twenty-eight of the world’s top roller derby teams competing for limited spots in the November Championships.
To date, the 2018 season has been action-packed, and – in typical derby style – dramatic AF! Beginning the year ranking 50 (FIFTY!!!), we took on some of the toughest skaters in the world including 2×4 (Buenos Aires), Paris and Sacramento, and fought our way up the ladder.
“This season was B-A-N-A-N-A-S”, says captain Catherine-Beat-Her Bonez. “We have sacrificed time with family and friends, saw teammates overcome devastating injuries [shout out to Lizzy Slaughter who will be joining us on bench in Atlanta], reached our rankings goal and the magic number #28, just to drop again four spots. But we proved to ourselves that we can make it, and however this season would have ended, that was crucial for us.”
Several international teams were unable to travel to A Coruña (Spain) where the first of the two WFTDA Playoffs are held, and this allowed Bear City to score the final spot in the Atlanta Playoffs – almost like it was meant to be.
“We might have been #slidingintoplayoffs due to declines, but don’t underestimate the hard work and determination we have dedicated to this season. We are ready to play on this level, and we are excited to seize the opportunity. #HoneyBadgerLikeABoss,” says Bonez.
